Yes folks, Google have finally announced what everyone has been conjecturing…they are moving into the realm of operating systems. Google’s foray into, what is for them, new territory will initially be aimed at the limited but burgeoning netbook market. Expected to be available somewhere in the second half of 2010, Google Chrome OS is bound to be based on pure cloud computing principles.

What is cloud computing? It’s more or less, a fancy term for doing things online rather than using the traditional method of downloading and installing applications for everyday computing needs. In fact, Google already have many of the basic web based applications in place.

I expect Google Chrome OS to be not much more than an extension of their Chrome browser with added links to the various online features. This from the official Google Blog:

“Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web.”

Considering the O.S. will be based on a Linux kernel and specifically designed for running online apps, I can fully appreciate and understand the speed, simplicity, fast and lightweight bits…but, I have some serious reservations about Google’s claims of enhanced security. I guess time will tell on that one!

As I said earlier, there have been murmurings of Google venturing into the operating system market for some time and I believe their introductory ploy is a clever one. Initially concentrating on an area where Vista has failed miserably and Linux has never been fully accepted/successful is a smart move indeed. Will they, eventually, up the ante and take on the big boys with a fully fledged O.S.… money says it is near a certainty!!

Cheers all…..JIM
