AVG once a fantastic security program now has become unbelievably bloated to the point of crashing many systems. Beware both AVG free and pro is moving in the wrong direction. I now classify AVG along with McAfee as
borderinga virus. Any program which takes over your machine and makes YOU a slave is malware. AVG 9.0 fits this bill.Much better alternatives: Avast and Avira.
will also slowdown you machine -- painfully.
Reason I ask is; although I think your appraisal is a tad harsh I do agree in principle re version 9.0 BUT I have read many reviews that this latest version is a huge improvement.
Is that not so??
When I wrote my prior post it was very late/early (timezone dependent) and I was very tired ... I did indeed mean AVG 10.xx. I have tried this latest ver. DL directly from AVG's website about 3 days before Marko posted the latest update to v.10. Placed it on my test-bench x86 (not VM) machine.
AVG Free 10.0.1191a3330 is simply horrid! Idle cpu usage while browsing is ugly. Internet speeds is painfully slow, damned thing prefetches every link on webpage with no way to turn it off. Auto-updates no matter what state your machine is in; toolbar problems not yet resolved, much more but I'm too fatigued to write.
Avast and Avira are much better choices.
RE: "BUT I have read many reviews that this latest version is a huge improvement"
Jim you seem to possess a sharp mind so I do not need to tell you many reviews are paid adverts ... certainly true of Norton products. Fair and balanced is an ideal very difficult to gleam from our information based society.

Point is: we must be more vigilante today then ever for quality info is real power.
Trust me, I do not put much store in the reviews and yes, I do realise many are from people with ulterior motives. That's the very reason I wanted you to confirm which version your comments related to. I put much more faith in an astute user's comments (such as yourself) than in editorial reviews.
Thanks again, all the best for 2011
Cheers.....Jim
AVG free had a good run , nearly ten years on our computers, but have now switched over to MSE.
( and I have no association with Microsoft)
MSE is very good and getting better. When we speak of the top 3 free anti-virus programs now, it has to be Avast, AntiVir and MSE.....AVG does not match up!!
