Publishers Description
Fences is a program that helps you organize your desktop, and can hide your icons when they're not in use. A "Fence", a term coined by this program, is an icon group on your desktop. Fences is an add-on to your desktop, not a replacement.

Rope off your desktop
Fences allows you to create shaded areas on your desktop that you can place icons in. You can label them however you wish, and move/resize them anywhere on the desktop. Pre-included layouts help speed the process for new users.

See your wallpaper again! Quickly hide & show all your icons with an easy double-click
Double click blank space on your desktop, and all your icons will fade out. Double click again, and they?ll return. We think this feature is so useful and unique, that we?ve applied for a patent on it. You can even pick icons and individual Fences to exclude!

Create snapshots, and have automatic scaling (for screen size changes)
Take and restore snapshots of your Fence layouts for backup, or for when you are doing different tasks. Change your resolution for playing games and Fences will keep them in the same relative spots. In the Pro version of Fences, the "snapshot" feature has been enhanced to automatically take and keep recent snapshots on hand, ensuring your desktop layout never gets lost.

Simple program but for me very useful, and it seems polished, too. Nice double click to hide icons and fences feature..HOWEVER:

I did notice a couple of issues that for me could use some work.
1. If the hide feature is activated, when a new file is dropped on the desktop, the icon will disappear. To work with the file, it is necessary to double click on the desktop to make it visible. It can then be set to be visible at all times. In the pay version, the icons show up even with hide activated. This is one of the few features that aren't included with the free version.
2. At least with Dexpot, fences and desktop icons appear on every desktop of a multiple desktop setup. Icons on the main desktop are not usually available for use on alternate desktops of Dexpot unless placed there or unless a shortcut is placed there. I would like it much better if the fences worked only for the main desktop. Not sure if this happens the same way with all multiple desktop programs.

When moving open windows from one desktop to another, Fences does not interrupt the action, which is a positive. Also, Fences does not seem to alter the functionality of RocketDock. On the other hand, some actions seem to cause icons inside of a fence to disappear at times. A click on the desktop brings them back.

Update: Notified the developer of the behaviors above from the program download site. He told me Fences will work fine with multiple user setups in Windows and with multiple monitor setups, also.

UPDATE:

'Fences' also has a slight conflict with Directory Opus' desktop double-click function. There may be a setting to fix this but I didn't feel like wading through Stardock's usual over-graphicked configuration menus. But thanks to Stardock anyway for freebies. Wish they'd update Right-Click.
