NEW: Simnet Registry Defrag 2010

A relative newcomer on the scene, Simnet, have just released a few new titles to wet your system tools appetite!. Simnet Registry Defrag 2010 is the latest from this newcomer, offering:

1. Automatic system restore points for safety
2. Automatic product updates
3. Smart and easy-to-use interface
4. Minimal installation, low memory and CPU usage!

They also have an uninstaller available entitled Simnet Uninstaller 2010 which, although is a nice complement to the Registry Defrag title, doesn't appear to offer much more than a simple uninstaller. Could have possibly been a better idea to integrate both products into one power pack, but I'm no developer!.

Let us know what you think of the newbie's:

REVIEW: TeamViewer

If, like me, your family or friends often call on you for various computer issues then you'll probably already know the pain!.   With the introduction of firewall routers, accessing remote computers became even more of a challenge, usually involving a trip to your remote client and opening ports on routers which would then be reset if the router encountered issues.   TeamViewer solves all that and can easily connect through most firewalls and routers easily and quickly.

Setting up the software takes no more than a couple of minutes, you simply install a copy on your own machine and the remote machine.   No awkward questions or complicated setup routines, nice and easy.   Then, when your relative or friend needs assistance you both start the program and the person needing remote support gives you the ID and Password on their screen, you enter this into your console then "Connect to partner".   Simples!!!.

Not only is this super fast and efficient, it is much more secure and trustworthy than a lot of other remote support tools, giving the remote client confidence that they can only allow remote access if they give you the ID and Password first :)

You can download the full installable version HERE or alternatively the portable version is available HERE.

NEWS: UK Government Considering Linux!

I couldn't help but chuckle recently when I read about the UK governments suggestion to replace all their Windows machines with the Linux operating system.   Fantastic as the idea may seem, I worked on the DWP contract (Dept Works & Pensions) and our team was responsible for rolling out thousands of XP machines across the UK and I realised early on that for many of the operators it would be challenging enough for them to operate a Windows machine, and now we have the suggestion of introducing them to Linux!.   I've tried Linux in many flavours myself and more often than not became seriously frustrated with it, not through any fault of Linux you understand, but through my early computing life being weaned on Windows.   Linux, in my opinion, isn't something people can simply switch to, there has to be some curiosity there to begin with, some desire to break free from the Windows cycle and a desire to release the potential of both the operator and the computer - this, I fear, is not going to happen in many workplaces and certainly not in an environment like the DWP where almost all of it's infrastructure is based around the Windows way!.

NEWS: 20 Billionth Tweet!

Having only started life in 2006, the online social media giant celebrated it's 20 billionth tweet on Saturday.   For such a landmark tweet, one would expect some profound and historical comment to commemorate the occasion ... but alas the actual tweet that clinched the title was "GGGGGGo_Lets_Go" from a Tokyo graphic designer for an advertising agency.   Profound or what?!.

NEWS: Jailbreaking the iPhone

Now that the U.S. Copyright Office has considered 'Jailbreaking' mobile devices NOT to be within their jurisdiction, as you would expect, we're beginning to see an influx of various software to do just that although one particular site, jailbreakme.com

My son, being the owner of an iPhone decided to give the site a whirl, initially all went well and he was able to access apps which wouldn't normally have been available to him, however the next day sure enough it seemed he wasn't able to receive various calls from friends, restoring the iPhone and removing the Jailbreak restored it's functionality so a word of warning to everyone considering Jailbreaking, it may just break more than you think!.

NEWS: Microsoft Money Free!

Since Microsoft stopped developing it's Money software, they have now released a fully working copy free of charge.   Money Plus Sunset Home and Business edition is a replacement to their previous Money Plus Home and Business.  It would appear, however, that from 2011 they intend to stop offering the online services found in the paid version and the free version doesn't include any of the online options, but hey, MS Money is now free!.

How To ...

How to perform a boot-time scan with Avast and why!

You can comment on this article HERE.

There are many antivirus programs out there which are capable of performing boot-time scans, but for me there has only ever been one free antivirus product that steps up to the mark consistently and that's Avast Free Antivirus!.   Simplicity is the key to Avast's success, with installation and antivirus protection taking under a minute and a boot-time scan possible with only 5 clicks.   What is a boot-time scan, I hear you ask?!.   Well, under normal circumstances your antivirus software monitors the goings-on inside your computer, like file and folder activity, but sometimes viruses can attach themselves to important files that can't be altered or repaired whilst your operating system is using them.   With a boot-time scan, Avast scans these files before the operating system starts and thus is not using them so when this scan finds a virus, even if attached to an important system file for example, it can deal with it and even remove it successfully!.

Here's a quick guide on how to start a boot-time scan using Avast Free Antivirus:

1. First of all you need to open up the Avast interface by right-clicking on the avast icon in your system tray, then choose "Open avast! user interface" as in Fig 1.1

Fig 1.1

2. Next, down the left hand side menu of the interface click "SCAN COMPUTER" then "Boot-time Scan".   Next, hit the "Schedule Now" button.

Fig 1.2

3. Once you've hit the "Schedule Now" button a message will appear like the one in Fig 1.3 below "CURRENT STATUS: scheduled to run at next boot" at which point hit the "Restart computer" button and your PC will restart.   Before it restarts fully, Avast will begin to scan all the files on your PC which could take a considerable amount of time so please be patient.   If it finds any suspicious files it will attempt to tell you what it's found and will give you options to choose from, such as whether to delete that file alone or to delete all suspicious files it finds.   Make the necessary choices and once complete your computer will start as normal!.

How to use SpamAssassin for Windows

You can comment on this article HERE.

SpamAssassin may not be an application many have heard of, which is understandable as this superior spam filtering technology is primarily used by corporations at the email server level and does a fantastic job of ridding busy workplaces of nuisance emails.   We've all received those menacing mails at one point or another, and many webmail services do a decent job of filtering the obvious junk, but what about all those other emails that manage to sneak past their spam filters?.

First of all I must point out that SpamAssassin for Windows is only meant for those using an email client on their PC and works with POP3 mail, this means if your using Outlook, Thunderbird or a similar email client and use an email service supporting POP3 (i.e. Gmail) then you can install SpamAssassin and experience true spam filtering like never before (note, unfortunately Hotmail does not offer POP3).   Most modern email services like Gmail provide POP3, but sometimes it may not be enabled by default, check with your provider first and at the same time note the pop3 server name.

To get started, simply download and begin the install of SAwin32.

1. First, you'll be asked to enter the name of your POP3 server as in Fig 1.1 below.   Enter it and press 'Next'.

Fig 1.1

2. Continue pressing 'Next' through the next few screens and make sure you enable the option 'Add to Startup Menu (will run each time you logon)' as in Fig 1.2 below.

Fig 1.2

3. Continue installing with defaults, and once complete you can run the program by enabling 'Start SAwin32'.   Press 'Finish' to complete the install.

Fig 1.3

4. Now SAwin32 is installed, it's time to adjust your mail client.   Basically, all we're doing here is setting the server name or 'incoming mail server' to 'localhost'.   If you know how to do this then feel free to proceed.   Unfortunately it's impractical to try and explain how to do this for every mail client, and we suggest you refer to your help documentation on how to specify the POP3 address, but here's an example on how do it with a few popular clients, Outlook 2003 and Thunderbird.

For Thunderbird, change 'Server Name' to 'localhost' as in Fig 1.4a below.

Fig 1.4a

For Outlook 2003, change 'Incoming mail server (POP3)' to 'localhost'.

Fig 1.4b

Once you've completed that step, save the changes and your email client is now configured to start working with SAwin32.   Mail that SAwin32 considers junk will have *****SPAM***** in it's subject line, and you could even set up a rule for your incoming email to send all mail which has *****SPAM***** in the subject to the junk folder, or you could just have it deleted straight away!.

How to watch a support topic

You can comment on this article HERE.

For those already subscribed to our RSS Feeds, you may have noticed that we don't have feeds available for our Support Topics.    This is because our RSS system won't alert you to replies, and even if it did it may start generating a lot of alerts so could soon overwhelm a subscriber!.   Support topics are better known as the comments section for our downloads.   When you view a download, you'll notice the link "View/Add Comments" (see Fig 1.1 below) which will take you to the support topic where you can then leave comments, ask a question or just leave an opinion on that particular software.

Here's how to get notified via email when someone responds to a support topic on a download you are interested in.   Note however that you must be a registered member and logged in for this to work.

1. First of all, find the download you are interested in and click the link "View/Add Comments" which will then take you to it's support topic.

Fig 1.1

2. Now your looking at the support topic, and you should see the buttons we've highlighted in Fig 1.2 and in particular the "Watch Topic" button.   If you don't see these buttons you are not logged in, log in first and try again.   Now, press the "Watch Topic" button and continue to step 3.

Fig 1.2

3. OK, now you should be presented with a few options on how you would like to receive notification when a reply is made.   We've highlighted the options that are of interest to us at the moment.   By default, the "Delayed Notification" option is already selected.   This means if you are not logged in to the site when a reply to that topic is made you will receive an email after a short while informing you that a reply was posted.   You can choose any of the options which suit you best.   Once you've decided which option to go for simply hit the "Proceed" button.

Fig 1.3

4. Once you are returned to the topic you should now notice that the "Watch Topic" button has changed to "Stop watching topic" as in Fig 1.4 below.   You can hit this button at any time to unsubscribe from receiving notifications.

Fig 1.4

5. At some other point you may no longer wish to receive notifications on a few topics, especially if you're currently watching a lot, or you may even want to change how you are notified, but what if you can't remember which topics you were watching?

Well, that's easy ... simply go to "My Settings" (see Fig 1.5 below).

Fig 1.5

6. Next, choose the "Forums" tab across the top of your options then "Manage Watched Topics" and to the right will appear a list of topics that you are currently subscribed to receive notifications on.

Fig 1.6

7. Look down the list until you find the topic (or topics) you wish to change.   Click the square box until you see a 'tick' appear (as in Fig 1.7) and once you've selected which one's you want to alter, scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit the drop-down menu.   If you simply don't want to be notified of replies to these topics any longer just choose "Unsubscribe" otherwise choose one of the other options.  Once your done, simply hit the "with selected" button to confirm your choice and that's it, your done!.

"No Notification" will just stop you receiving alerts but will leave you 'subscribed' to the topic so you can return later and change it again if you wish

"Immediate Notification" will send you alerts as soon as someone replies to the topic.

"Delayed Notification" will send you alerts shortly after someone replies and if you are not logged into the site

"Daily Digest" will send you alerts only once each day

"Weekly Digest" will send you alerts only once a week

An Airliner

At a recent software engineering management course in the US, the participants were given an awkward question to answer. "If you had just boarded an airliner and discovered that your team of programmers had been responsible for the flight control software how many of you would disembark immediately?"

Among the ensuing forest of raised hands, only one man sat motionless. When asked what he would do, he replied that he would be quite content to stay onboard.

With his team's software, he said, the plane was unlikely to even taxi as far as the runway, let alone take off.

2 Programmers on a Highway

Two computer programmers are driving on a Highway. They switch on the radio and there is a warning: Please note that a car is driving on highway 75 against the traffic. The programmer near the driver looks at him and says: One? There are hundreds of them.
