FreewareBB _ Site Feedback & Suggestions _ New Look Or Previous Look?

Posted by: marko Apr 5 2010, 06:29 PM

We've had the new look site up and running for a while now and want to ask you, the member, whether you prefer the new look or the previous look. Just to remind you, here's a screenshot of the previous look on FreewareBB ...

The new look is a bit more contemporary and polished but, the sidebar menu options could use a bit by way of tweaking. A good example comes to mind when I think of sidebar search and atomization of results and that is

Back to the topic -- one easy way to resolve the dilemma surrounding old and new is make the sidebars slide out menu options or visible with a user's preferences. You'd be covered and free from ridicule as the responsibility for preferential display of content rests solely on the shoulders of the end-user/visitor of this site.

Take it easier,

New look is better, though I think there should be a username/password box to login at the top, so people don't have to go to the login page to log in.

Thanks for the response Rob, we were almost at the point of creating a new nav for the old look when we decided a new look altogether was needed, I think we'll investigate and mess around with a few dynamic menu's, possibly showing menu heading only and slides our to reveal content ...

again, thanks for the note dstrout, will keep this is mind also but please keep the suggestions coming all

I like the new site, too. I also agree with dstrout that the login should be available as part of the header.

except for this silly code thing

Thanks for all the comments so far, it really does help us make sure we're doing it right, from the votes received it's obvious the new look is preferred which is a relief to be honest and I will be dealing with the nav bar over the next few days, hopefully make it much cleaner and neater
Please do keep the suggestions coming though.

Tweak the sidebars -- collapsable!

Also, an extended search and filter functionality would be nice as sidebar content like's advanced search sidebar that lets you filter the results in a fashionable, yet practical way, and all at 0 calories.

This procedure would require some serious tagging but, in the end the whole site and every user would benefit from the undertaking even if a new search and/or filter system was implemented.

The site actually has 3 quite powerful search facilities already Rob, a google search visible on the header area, a downloads search built in and a forums search built in. Granted I'd like both built in searches to be as one, but it's not possible on IPB forums, this is why we introduced the google search as that will simply search anything on the site, but both built in searches can be tailored to respective categories/forums, etc and custom queries can be run also. The built in searches can be found under the Downloads and Forums drop down menus and while I'd agree a new, more apt search would be preferable this, again, is something that we would have to develop over a period of time and would require a lot of coding to get it right so I can't see this happening anytime soon but it's another good suggestion for us to keep in mind

Just also realised that my screenshot shows I was searching for "Keith Lemon born" LOL! - just in case anyone is curious, I was originally born in Leeds, England, UK and suddenly realised he had an all familiar accent so was googling where he was born, turns out he is a Yorkshireman from Leeds too!!!. Useless piece of info I know, but thought I'd share it anyway

I like how the header looks now, with the login at the top. I especially like the bar once I am logged in, with my username, logout link, etc. One thing I do not like still is the fact that when replying to or creating a post, the text in the textbox is italicized. It just doesn't look right. That shouldn't be too hard to fix, right?

Posted by: marko Apr 8 2010, 06:44 PM

I'm wondering if anyone else finds the italics a prob, if we get enough people agreeing I'd definately consider changing it
