Have you used a freeware title recently, or found it long ago but still use it, that you just couldn't be without? One of those downloads that makes you truly appreciate freeware? I'm not talking about a list of favourite freeware, I'm talking about THE ONE, if you had to decide which one out of them all?? Not so easy now eh?!

For me, and I know this is really boring, but it would be between the Opera and Firefox browser, and if pushed I'd say Firefox. Because I have always had to use a computer and always been on the web for most of my jobs and hobbies and the browser became (and still is) my portal to the world, my lifeline through my career and my source of knowledge. Firefox has always strived to provide maximum functionality with it's vast array of add-on's and plugins and I have never been let down with it. Internet Explorer is a distant memory for me to be honest, although I have to use it now and again to check formatting on web pages, etc, but it more or less collects dust on my desktop!.

I can't honestly say much against the other freeware browsers out there as they are all great examples and fit particular needs of particular people, it's just Firefox was most definately my first browser love (YUK!)

For me its OpenOffice, wouldn't touch MS Office with a barge poll anymore - kills me to see people still buying it!!!

OpenOffice, K-Meleon browser, ImageBurn and keepass are the four that I have to have installed on all my PCs.

It's great that OpenOffice and Firefox, etc. are free, but the one freeware application I couldn't do without - or find anything that does what it does as well - is IrfanView, and it's the work of one guy.

Being an avid movie buff, my favourite freeware (the one I just couldn't be without) is DVDShrink. I've been using it now through 4 versions of Windows and it has worked flawlessly on all operating systems right through to and including Windows 7. That alone, considering it has not been actively developed for years, is a glowing testament to the brilliance of the original software.

Hi Marko,
Have to agree with you about Firefox. But for a non-browser favourite I would like to put forward the file manager Xplorer2 lite. I don't like crippled software but Nikos has always been very generous with the 'lite' sector and has really only aimed to sell the power functions which home users would not tend to need. If you like two pane file managers then I recommend you to try this program you will begin to find that Win Explorer is quite tiresome if you have to return to it when you use someone else's PC. Xplorer2 is designed to behave like Win Exp and this makes it very easy to pick up just as the author intended.
Another little utility which I like is the search program Snowbird. It lacks eye-candy but it is tiny and so fast. But I am also a sucker for good looking interfaces so my last contribution must be Vista Start Menu which has brought new life to my old XP OS. (of course if you happen to have Vista or W7 then ignore my last offering) This is also a light version but once again this is another generous author who really only sells what I consider to be power features.

Another big thumbs up for Search Everything. The best search I have used.

Another software I love is Q-Dir

Fast and easy to use, with an amazing quadruped-view and Q-Dir does not have to be installed and can be run from USB drive.

For me, best freeware has to be 7Zip.
