Just to let everyone know that on 12th April 2011 my family and I will be going on holiday for 2 weeks :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Myself and my son will be travelling to Spain by car whilst my wife and daughter by plane, purely because I'm a big girls blouse and hate flying although I do love driving so thought I'd give it a whirl. For anyone who is interested, we leave early morning 12th April and will be travelling down to Dover for an overnight stay, early on the Ferry to Calais 13th April and drive all day through France and into Spain to reach our destination around tea time (hopefully). My wife and daughter are flying at 9am so should be there before us - we'll hopefully be keeping our Facebook page up to date with our journey progress (http://www.facebook.com/pages/manage/?act=51153965#!/pages/Road-Trip-To-Spain/155759757820943) though I suspect (and hope) it will be a somewhat uneventful process :)

I will be trying to keep things updated on FreewareBB whilst away, though may not always be possible to reach the internet so do bear with us if all goes quiet for a while and on our return we'll be finalising plans for the site to improve, add and extend on many features and take ourselves to the new, updated version of IPBoard which I'm sure everyone will be excited about :)

    For now, Hasta pronto :good:

Well, sitting here in the North of Spain after what can only be described as the biggest rip-off drive I've ever experienced in my life, it's hardly even worth talking about the holiday itself!. Not sunny enough to enjoy the heat and the culture is somewhat arrogant to the point where it's almost uncomfortable. Hotel is on a main road with a train track running parallel which is nice as the trains start at something like 6am, the kids are bored out of their minds as there is basically nil entertainment and the beach is a shingle type material, not sandy, so it's like walking on broken glass, and to top it off everything shuts down at some silly hour like 5pm so no opportunity to catch what evening sun sticks around over a cup of coffee outside!. But hey, at least we have limited internet connectivity which is fast .... when it works!.

Thankfully made it back from Spain after a mammath drive, not quite fully functional at the moment but I'll be going flat out over the weekend with some long overdue updating so please bear with me :)

The holiday itself picked up a little Jimbo, unfortunately I think we'd picked just about the worst location possible, really cold at night, stoney beach and a great big train track running right outside our room!. I love a sandy beach on hols but this one was like walking on broken glass, the weather wasn't too bad during the day, we had a few poor days but otherwise not bad. I would never do the drive again though, hated it from the minute we hit the first toll road in France, managed to navigate our way around Paris with some issues and then the tolls just seemed to appear every few hours - on the way back we ended up in the streets of France trying to find a road which probably didn't exist anymore!. Wasted about an hour or so trying to get back on the right road, finally found it and arrived in Calais around 9pm Wednesday night - up 5am Thursday morning to catch the 6.30am ferry back to Dover and my bank card refused to work for the hotel, so had to pay by cash, forgot about the time differences and so missed our ferry but managed to get on the next one, the crossing was choppy as hell and when we did eventually get back to the UK I realised I probably wouldn't have enough cash to get us all the way back to Scotland so tried my card again but it refused point blank to work - had another card which I tried and managed to get £60 from that so was enough to make it!.

The language barrier was really terrible, although I know a bit of French it really was quite daunting at times, particularly when trying to fill up at petrol stations, here in the UK we're used to black diesel pumps, in France it's sometimes yellow pumps, othertimes black pumps with a yellow sign saying "gazonline". Not a nice feeling when your not sure what fuel you're pumping into your car - saw a poor guy in a car from the UK sitting at the side of the road on the way across with smoke bellowing from the exhaust, obviously put the wrong fuel in the car, nasty and expensive mistake to make!.

All in all, a good lesson for me I think, basically means if I can't fly to hols I'll be restricting myself to the UK cause I would never do that drive again and even at that I would need to go further down mainland Spain to get better weather and nicer beaches but given that it tool us 12 hours from Calais to Pineda De Mar (north Spain) I really don't see me doing this at all - couple of strong vallium from the docs before I get to the airport me thinks :)

Good to be back though ;)

So, I guess that means you won't be driving to Oz anytime in the near future then mate?? :D

It doesn't matter where one goes or how good a time one has, it's always nice to get back home!!

Our eldest son had a terrible time many years ago after falling ill while holidaying in Greece. The language barrier, during his stay in hospital, helped create what turned out to be an horrific scenario.

Good to have you back mate....and all in one piece too!! :)

That would need to be one hell of a take-off from our shores Jimbo to reach Oz!!. As for the language barrier, it's always a bit of a prob depending on where you decide to go, as I say I have limited French and Spanish but sometimes it's not enough, but as you say it's good to be back and just about in one piece too :)
