So Iceland is smoking again. Makes your long drive to Spain look quite reasonable after all.

I use XP on my main PC and fail to see any reason to got higher, except for the obvious lack of (future) support.

In other words, XP does everything very well that I need of it. Windows 7 does not add anything.
I have bought a laptop with Windows 7, always planned to installed XP, but never got round to it.

So I have used both and still stick by my first statement!

Freeware make XP so good, Windows 7 media centre is confusing and controlling!!

One other belief I have about Windows 7:
For experienced users (me) it is very annoying. For beginners, it is still annoying as answering 'yes or no' to a simple question they REALLY do not understand (like "this file poses a risk.... etc", so it is pointless!

One day we will have to go to Windows 7 (or 8), but not through real choice! (maybe Linux!)

Some interesting replies there guys, campart I have added another choice to the poll "Still with XP and will be moving from Windows once XP runs out" which I think prob covers anyone else who is considering moving away from Windows altogether after XP support dies. If memory serves me right, XP will remain supported until 2014 - though for anyone considering the move from Windows I'd highly recommend giving Ubuntu a whirl, you can download it directly and install it on your machine (more details here) or alternatively (and probably recommended) you can try it on a CD or USB stick first - see here.

I am not sure if it would be a useful option in the poll, but I am currently tied to XP because that is the same OS as where I work.
(Not that I dislike XP - it is fine.)

When my work changes, I will change my home OS.

I am on Seven at the moment, but only because my arm was twisted. Quicken is my sole reason for still using Windows of any version. I also have XP on two other PCs in my house. When Windows 7 craps out I will NOT buy another Windows OS. I have Linux/Ubuntu on one of my laptops and it works very well for me. Bye-bye Windows the second Quicken comes out in a Linux version.

Marko, nice enough survey, but... it does not cover my ongoing experience with OSes: in fact I still do use all three of them.

On an older Pentium4 (1.8 MHz) PC I'm still under XP SP3 which works (fairly) correctly. So I'll stick with it even after they stop support (and if that proves a problem, Ubuntu it will be!)

My main (HP) machine came with Vista cause I was naive enough to believe that buying a Vista machine straightaway would be "the" solution (never performed an MS "upgrade" as from DOS 2.1, cause I don't trust “them”: always performed a full format + clean install!). Wrong I was: 4 complete reinstalls in about 2½ years! And still (always after a short period of "good" behavior) unstable, prone to blue-screens and crashing my faithful Office XP a few times a day! A new "experience" for this old (71 ) guy, active for 25 years in the PC support area (even started the IT Helpdesk of a 3000+ Telecom company...). Well that doesn't help me a single bit (well, almost), with this Vista cookie monster. Not that I am a Vista basher as such: I thought the problems reported everywhere were due to inadequate hardware or not so successful upgrades! But here I'm merely reporting my findings.

My new (HP) portable runs Windows 7 and does it well (so far .) If it weren't for my 26" screen on the desktop and a dictionary I can't do without (not recognized under Win 7, whatever "solution" I applied), I would completely switch to the portable with an external mouse! Only problem after 2 months: I had to do away with the automatic Windows updates, because after an SP1 update the system would install the same new updates again and again, each time I started the machine. So far Win 7seems even stabler than good ol' XP! And that's something. On the hardware level my desktop and portable run almost equal in the benchmarks, but Win 7 indeed makes the portable run much faster (not only in boot and shutdown times, but over all. So far still no BSOD nor wacky behavior and since the curtailed Office version it now carries is more than sufficient for my needs (I miss the dictionary though), even if this old guy is not very banner-minded, I'm not going to risk making my life unpleasant on that by trying to install Office XP...

FrancisV, coming from an IT support background myself (guess it's common for us guys to go overboard at home!) I used to have all manner of OS's both client and server level which would be my test bed - it didn't really go down well with the family when remote installs kicked off half way through them doing something on their PC's or the main server at home went down when I was at work and no-one could log on to their machines! - needless to say I've since "decommissioned" all the server hardware and now have a normal workstation setup with Windows 7 - kids are a great deal happier, cause the ISA server which used to sit between us and the net is now gone so big dad can't keep tabs on them as easy, but alas I still have some power (K-9 on my younger daughters laptop and OpenDNS at router level just to catch anything else!)

Hey Guys - Some great feedback here and some interesting results too.

Just to let you know:

Bearing in mind that XP users seem to be the most loyal to their OS; this poll was started with the main goal of ascertaining how the migration rate from XP to Windows 7 was progressing. Older Windows OS's were included 'out of interest', both Linux and Mac were excluded because they weren't really germane to the exercise.

So, please don't feel left out because your OS of choice was not originally included in the poll.....that was not meant to reflect negatively on Linux nor Mac, they just were not part of this particular equation.

All my fault, I should have explained the purpose of the poll more clearly. Marko has been most generous in adding extra categories to accommodate those preferences.

@Francis - Hey Francis (from one old geezer to another ). I've been right through the entire series of Windows OS's; still running XP, Vista and Windows 7. I agree 100% with your appraisal, Windows 7 is marvelous; more secure than XP, boot and shut down times are good and the OS is extremely stable and nice to work with. Apart from the drawback of older 'favourite programs' sometimes not being supported, Windows 7 is (IMO) much better than XP. In fact, I would choose Windows 7 over XP without hesitation.

Strangely enough Jim (and I hope those who have already migrated to W7 can confirm) my affair with Windows 7 is a kind of 'love-hate' relationship at the minute - I can still find a few negatives in there, but I'm still happy to boot up and crack on with Windows 7 now, whereas initially it was a case of turning the power on with a long stick and peeking through my fingers in anticipation of the dissapointment and frustrations

Yes well, being one of those who just 'must have' the latest OS... IMMEDIATELY, I think I have probably had more time to familiarise myself with Windows 7 than you have mate. Plus: going from XP to Vista to Windows 7 is much easier than going straight from XP to Windows 7.

Once you get used to the vagaries (and a few minor glitches), I'm sure you'll end up liking Windows 7 very much.

Don't forget too; there's always the terrific series of Windows 7 Tips & Tricks, right here on FreewareBB, to refer to for assistance, . They are an excellent set of articles written by a very nice bloke.

I primarily use Ubuntu. I am still using XP, but only when it provides some support that is not available via Linux/WINE. I also still use DOS command line as I have many DOS only utilities that I use. I may even install PC/DOS under Virtualbox once I eventually get a faster system. DOSBOX and DOS Emuator also have shortcomings. I see no need to go to Win. 7 (nor Vista) - besides, Win. 8 will be coming out shortly and who knows how the Win. 7 users will get screwed over (BTW, Ubuntu is not perfect on this either - some older apps no longer work or require effort). When I am forced to buy a new PC (or have one given to me) that has Vista or Win. 7, then I will try it.

BTW, I would have used "check boxes" for multiple choices. I suspect many who check "until the death" would have selected "until my system craps out and it would be cheaper to buy a new PC (or lap-top) and I have no choice but to take Win. 7 (or 8) installed".

Have you tried GnuCash? I have not used it nor Quicken, but I have heard it provides a some Quicken-like functions. You can check it out at GnuCash.org. Marko has Ver. 2.4.4 on the BB and Ver. 2.4.5 is out on gnucash.org.
