Google have started a new service to rival Facebook and other social sites. It's called Google Plus (Google+) and promises to be very social, very bold and go where no man has ever gone before......well not quite that last bit but you know what I mean. :)

Google has obviously been sitting up and taking notice of Facebook's flourishing universal popularity; Google+ offers all the usual social sharing options PLUS a couple of really useful and unique extra features.

"Circles" - Provides a means for users to separate contacts into various categories, so certain personal information and photos can be selectively shared with particular groups only.

"Hangout" - Provides a video chat service which can be utilised by up to ten participants at a time.

"Sparks" - Let Sparks know what you’re into and it will refer you to subject matter based on your selections. So whenever you’ve got some free time, there’s always something interesting to watch, read, or share.

"Huddle" - Conference texting service for multiple participants.

Google+ is currently in Beta (testing) stage and so is being limited to invitation only participation, and that is creating some issues of its own. Due to an overwhelming global demand, Google has been forced to put a stop to the invitation only system...for now. Signing up for Google+ is nigh on impossible at the moment, invitation or not, and that is causing a deal of uncertainty.

It also has the spammers out in force. Unscrupulous spammers (are there any other kind??) are busy creating fake email templates, which exactly resemble the legitimate Google+ invitations, and sending them to random users from a purchased email list. Clicking on a “Learn more about Google +” link will take you to a spam website which is trying to sell you cheap pharmaceuticals or other random products.

Doesn't take the spammers long to take advantage of a situation does it!!

Given that it's Google, it'll attract a shed load of people no doubt, but for me it's like re-inventing the wheel so to speak, social networking is, and has been for some time, dominated by FaceBook - everyone knows it, most people use it and for the most part everyone is comfortable with it. Unless Google bring something really unique and useful to the table, it probably doesn't stand much chance of out-performing FB.
