In around 1 year from now, XP support will officially come to an end meaning those of you still clinging onto your trusty XP will have to face a few stark realities.

Either continue using XP in the hope no newvulnerabilitiesare found, or take the plunge and upgrade to Windows 7, or worst still, buy a completely new machine. Now, depending on when you make the decision or when your budget will allow you to make a move, if you really can't stomach Windows 8 then the move will have to be quicker than a blink of an eye because there are only a handful of machine being sold currently with Windows 7 still installed, the vast majority of machines are now coming pre-installed with Windows 8.

Of course, if your machine is up to the job, you can purchase a Windows 7 diskany timeyou like but the reality is you could probably save another hundred quid or so and buy yourself a brand new laptop ... so, choices choices choices !! Question is, what will you be doing?

I'll probably manually upgrade to Windows 7, but it will be awhile yet because of lack of finances at the moment. I'm not saying that I won't get crazy and go straight to Win 8, but as of now, Win 7 looks like my next move, but it will be at the last minute.

Might get another PC soon. If so, it will have Windows 7, but only because I want to learn more about the OS honestly. I like the clean slate XP is, so I will keep this PC an XP machine...

I am looking forward to seeing what kind of a "grizzled veteran" XP is. I think it might be tougher than estimated by the majority...

If you're serious about getting a new machine FS, I'd get your skates on mate, chances are you'll struggle to find Windows 7 machines shortly.

Good point marko. I'll have to get the bug I think. Worst case, I will build a PC and add Windows 7. Actually, that's kind of what I have my mind on doing...sort of hand crafting a nice work/business type machine...

OPTION 9: Get off the Microsoft treadmill!

At work & home I am surrounded by ex-XP and W7 machines, and I've installed various distros of Linux on all I can get ahold of. Mostly I dual-boot in the slight chance I NEED to run Windows for something.

You have nothing to lose but your chains!

One of my computers, and older desktop,is on XP and working perfectly. I had a laptop on Win 7 and it was great, but it died and the extended warranty would not fix it, they gave me 1/2 of what I paid for it after 2 years of use. I liked 7, it was a lot like XP, but my new laptop is Win 8. Hated it whan I first got it, but thankfully, many smart people out there have found ways around the difficult things and I have learned to use it for my somewhat basic computer uses. It is faster to boot than XP or 7 though. Why didn't MS simply make XP better?

That's unlucky with the Windows 7 machine Ralph, but after only 2 years of use I wouldn't have been happy with that at all, out of warranty or not, it's not the first time I've managed to argue with a manufacturer that they are obliged to replace, or at the very least repair, a device even when it's out of warranty. As for MS making XP better, I've asked that one previously too, but I never got the answer which leaves me draw my own conclusions, namely that XP wouldn't provide MS with a mobile market, Vista/7 would, because essentially that's all Windows 8 is, W7 in disguise !!
