I have a television tuner, and it causes blue screens every once in awhile. No big deal, except that I have to erase the 4 GB memory.dmp file every time. I erase everything.

In Windows tonight to erase memory.dmp, and I noticed a .cab file named PSCardfile. I looked for a decent card file program a while back, and it seems the idea went nowhere after Windows 3.1, which came standard with one. Anyone on XP...do you have this file in C:\Windows? Maybe I downloaded it, but I don't recall downloading a cab file.

Probably up against it now FS with support for drivers, etc, normally I'd suggest downloading the latest drivers but as I say, chances are you'll already have them for XP and buying a new Tuner wouldn't necessarily have the drivers required for XP, catch 22 !!.

Unfortunately, I can't really suggest anything else, other than to maybe remove the hardware physically, reboot, shutdown, and try reseating it in another PCI slot or something :good:

Oh it's an 3 or 4 year old external tuner marko, and the driver is fine. Every once in awhile the signal in the television skips...this is the second one I've had (returned one a couple of months after the purchase to the kind seller who verified it was broken with a different problem), and he sent another one that he tested. The signal thing I have read in posts from other users around the net, so apparently it's native to the tuner...it's a mild annoyance, but when it happens sometimes the picture sticks. When I unplug the device, I don't use the "Remove hardware safely" tool, so sometimes when I plug it back in it blue screens. Honestly, it's almost never, and I so rarely boot, it's one of the few times I ever do, so I don't even really care about it. I boot on the average once every 5 to 8 days I guess, unless I'm installing and testing software.

The PSCardfile thing is unrelated. I just found it in the Windows folder when I went in to delete memory.dmp from the blue screen. I probably downloaded the program and left it there. Some things I leave, because I like the idea, and I just don't care about the extra 3-4 MB or whatever. Probably my thinking was that I wanted to remember occasionally how MS abandoning the Cardfile program in 3.1 affected things. I mean Cardfile is an idea that could have been built on and improved and turned into something I think. Goes back to high school and college for me. We used a note card system to draft research papers...

FutureShock, as far as I know CardFile Pegasus was developed by PinderSoft as a Shareware and the name of the program executable file was PSCardfile.exe.

This might be what left the cab file in your system.

Pindersoft seems to have disappeared from the W3 as the dot com page points to an automotive garage site maker of some sort!

The Win 3.1 program was called MSCardfile.

                    Quantum D.

Thanks for the run down on PinderSoft and this program. I really was wanting to know if MS had dropped in into Windows XP that way, but it must have been me that put it there. I'd like to have a modern card file program, but the ones I've seen don't have the features I would like to have. Looks to me like the developers here were on a good track.

This is one of the ideas in Windows 3.1 that I was disappointed to see dropped by Microsoft. Another was the packager, which is I know still in Office 2007, but I think it could have been updated into a nice/better app/feature, especially in Office. I was very disappointed to see Money and Works dropped too. I thought MS could have spent some money on them and come out on top, especially given how much development Office will need going forward. They could have used Works to fill in sales as newer versions of Office take longer to develop. All the hard parts are ahead of that team I think...with the exception of macro capability.

MS seems so obsessed with appearing clean. Wish they would get the heart of their OS and its features so clean...

                    :good:
