Not being a computer guru, I especially like the the plain language on this site.  I like the new layout as well, but I especially like that people far more knowledgeable than me are doing all of the work behind the scenes so that folks like me can safely try out new software.  Lots of respect for all of those who do the incredible work behind my computer sceen to make all of this possible.  Love this site, have always felt well recieved here.

James, your more than welcome to take on the task yourself if you wish, unfortunately it's a full time job for me keeping this website running with administration tasks, updates, finding new downloads, sifting through the idiots who spam is constantly and unlike Gizmo's website, I don't have the help of dozens of volunteers and I don't take in thousands each month from ads - for the past year I've been paying the $100 per month to keep the site up and running from my own pocket - if something needs done, raise your hand and volunteer to help otherwise I'm afraid keeping the site alive will be my priority for the next short while.

And actually, I don't "filter out" anything, I just don't have the time to wade through thousands of websites searching for whether or not their software runs on Linux or not - as I've said before, if the developers make it obvious their software runs on linux, I'll mark it as such, if they don't, then I can't spend anymore time on a developers website than I already do - there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Jim, I'd be more than happy to list Linux/MacOS apps in much more detail and on a much more regular basis, but I just don't have the time at the moment - Linux is also somewhat of a foreigner to me in regards to attempting to support it - that said however, I'll keep an open mind on the matter and may indeed try and source a good repository for grabbing some decent Linux listings to add to the site - any suggestions on where to find some decent Linux apps welcome :)

#105851 Google to penalise the search results for pirate sites - right or wrong?

Posted Bala7 on 14 August 2012 - 09:39 PM

although I personally think it's very possible they already do that anyway ...
Wait, what, you think ???
Google is a publicly traded company who answers to its customers (aka: shareholders) on a quarterly basis. As a public company, if Google should fail to deliver profits each and ever quarter, the two founders of Google will be fired just as Steve Jobs was fired from Apple in the '90s

Google's job is to manipulate search results favoring those who pay ad revenue.
Same goes for Facebook.

What will we be saying two years from now about torrenting if, for example it becomes popular again...
Wait, what, again ??? When did it ever fall out of favor. As a father of four children, one in College, I can certify, torrenting is what kids live for. (and gaming, which are torrented, mostly.) Authorities close down one site, 10 more open. Amateurs use Google, these kids have developed their own personal crawlers indexing pirate sites and share everything covertly via Usenet.

#105475 Internet Association

Google, Facebook, Amazon and eBay, have formed a lobby group that goes by the name of the "Internet Association".  The Association was created with the purpose of advancing " public policy solutions that strengthen and protect an open, innovative and free internet ".

Word has it that the Association will be based in Washington and will be "officially" formed in September 2012, and will be headed by former congressional staffer Michael Beckerman.

A source familiar with the lobby says the group will be a " permanent association " and will advocate " on behalf of the internet industry and its vast users", and advance "public policy solutions to strengthen America's global internet leadership".

It was also noted that this is the first lobby group of it's kind.

Now with word that Eastman Kodak is filing for bankruptcy, Google is teaming with Samsung, HTC, and LG to gain the companies patents. This brings in another two powerhouses who have teamed together once before,, Apple will reteam with Microsoft to try and beat out the competition of the first team for the Kodak patents.
It's a lucrative smartphone market that one team or the other, may achieve great benefits from.

#105451 What is Hands Down Your Favorite Freeware?

Posted Claw on 27 July 2012 - 05:43 AM

I have a 4-way at the moment. Ccleaner because it never lets me down,,,,CleanMem because I forget I even have it. 3DTop because it's great fun to have,,and Combofix which has saved my PCs numerous times, the best of its kind. That's it for now because I really don't keep too many things for long. Ccleaner, CleanMem and 3DTop stay on, but Combofix needs to be downloaded when you need it because it is constantly being updated.

I'd struggle to answer this, I use a handful of freeware which I couldn't manage without, some based on being able to work with the site, some the normal stuff on the desktop, but I guess out of all the favourites I'd still probably have to say it's between the security software like avast or SAS, MBAM ... who knows where we would be without them - probably a little less well off for a start :)

Pale Moon, an edge on the Iron Man,  mit der Deutsche sprechen und ads in yer face.

Pic-Pick Screen capture, especially when a pic has been barred from downloading/copying/pasting.

Skype, to talk to the world for no cost.

PhotoBucket to upload pics etc, and link them to post....'somewhere'.

TinySpell to put a teensy correct spelling next to the typing if one is unsure and avoids 'mess-up' spelling
